Maui, Hawai'i (Day Seven): Road to Hana & Wai’anapanapa State Park

By far one of the most famous activities to do on Maui is to drive the Road to Hana, a 64-mile stretch of highway along the coast, connecting Kahului to Hana. While the drive technically only takes three hours, what’s special about it is the number of roadside stops to see waterfalls, buy fresh banana bread, and take dips in the ocean. so plan on spending much more than a few hours on this excursion. While ideally you would stay the night in Hana to maximize your time for pit stops, it is possible to hit some of the highlights in a single day.

Shenandoah National Park, Virginia (Day 1): Rose River Waterfalls & Hawksbill Peak

Shenandoah National Park is in Virginia, encompassing some of the iconic Blue Ridge Mountain range, and this was our first time visiting. The park is long and skinny, Skyline Drive skirting the ridges of the mountains as it winds upwards, providing beautiful vistas along the drive. The park’s history is marked by struggle between the government of Virginia and those who had built their lives on this land, with forced evictions devastating families. So how could I pass up an opportunity to see one of my best friends and witness the height of the fall season in a lakeside vacation town?

Chasing Waterfalls in Wilmore

Wilmore, Kentucky, isn't exactly known for its water features. The Kentucky River cuts through Jessamine County with its muddy water and swollen banks, but if you're waterfall hunting, Wilmore often makes you come up bone-dry. You have to time your hike perfectly and know routes with likely falls along them. A few weekends ago, a couple of friends, my boyfriend, and I decided to head out to the Asbury Trails a few days after heavy rain with the idea of chasing some waterfalls in Wilmore.
